Triple Double Today

The Rams hold up the Triple Double Championship Trophy March 28, 2010 at Target Center.

After high school, there aren’t many appealing options for young adults to play organized, competitive basketball. Triple Double Basketball gives adults ages 18 to 29 a chance to compete in an exciting environment.

Triple Double is a competitive basketball league and nonprofit organization that aims to motivate young adults to be physically active and responsible leaders. Triple Double teams are formed through a league draft that disperses a talent pool of players with varying basketball and life skill sets. The draft takes people from different socioeconomic backgrounds and makes them teammates. They must then learn to communicate and work together as people in order to be successful on the court.

The league operates solely on volunteers and interns who believe in the social and physical benefits of the league. Most of our volunteers and interns play in the league, too. Our internship program gives college students the opportunity to gain professional experience in a field related to his or her major, such as photography, reporting and business management. While the league acts as a sort of mini NBA for the players, Triple Double Online is the ESPN.com where player stats, photos and league-related articles are displayed.

With basketball at the forefront, the importance of social awareness and community activism has gained momentum. The Triple Double community accumulated 132 lbs. of food and $65 of loose bills and change for Second Harvest Heartland in a two-week holiday food and fund drive in December. Those contributions provided more than 400 meals to people in need last holiday season and we hope to build on that this year. For Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a group for Triple Double players and league representatives volunteered at YouthLink as a part of Minneapolis Community and Technical College’s MLK Day of Service. YouthLink is a nonprofit organization that caters to homeless and at-risk youth and teens in Minneapolis.

Triple Double is working on creating future service and regular volunteer programs with YouLink and other nonprofit organizations to fuel a scholarship program. There are 96 players participating in Triple Double this season, but there are thousands more young male adults in the Twin Cities to be reached. Replacing entry fees with service hours will open our organization to those who can’t afford to play and will advance the Triple Double mission: To promote physically active and responsible leaders. Such a program will require thousands of dollars, which is why we are working on obtaining grants. Your contribution will help us get there.
